UD volleyball prepares for CAA tournament 10:52 a.m., Nov. 15, 2004--The University of Delaware volleyball team is preparing for the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament, which will be played Nov. 19-20 at Towson University. The Fightin Blue Hens enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will play against No. 2 seed Hofstra University in the semifinals Friday, Nov. 19. In the other semifinal game, No. 1 seed and host Towson will play against No. 4 seed George Mason University. The winner of the CAA championship will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I championship tournament. UD dropped two matches over the weekend, losing 3-1 at Towson and 3-1 at George Mason. With the losses, the Hens finished the regular season 22-8 overall and 9-5 in the CAA. Against George Mason, UD won the first game 30-28 but then fell 30-27, 30-20 and 30-25. Sarah Engle led the Hens with 19 kills and 17 digs, hitting .326 for the match and converting on 14 of her first 22 attacks. Valerie Murphy had 10 kills, four digs and three blocks and Allison Lutz had 30 assists and 12 digs. Taylor Govaars notched a team-high 19 digs. Against Towson, UD also won the first game 30-28 but then fell 30-24, 30-18 and 30-26. Engle had 14 kills, Murphy had 12 kills, Niecy Taylor had 10 kills and six blocks. Claire McCormack had eight kills and 14 digs for the Hens, while Govaars had 26 digs and Lutz had 32 assists, eight digs and three blocks. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
