Volleyball winning streak ends

2:23 p.m., Oct. 18, 2004--The University of Delaware ran its home winning streak to nine matches with a 3-2 victory over George Mason University on Friday but the streak ended on Saturday when the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell 3-0 to Towson University on Barbara Viera Court.

Both games were key Colonial Athletic Association contest, with that against Towson for first place in the conference standings. The victory over George Mason was the Hens’ first over the Patriots in 12 meetings.

Claire McCormack had 17 kills and 21 digs, Sarah Engle had 14 kills and 12 digs, Colleen Walsh had 17 kills, Valerie Murphy had 15 kills and four blocks and Niecy Taylor had eight blocks. Allison Lutz had 52 assists and Taylor Govaars had 28 digs.

Towson held the UD offense to just 33 points in ending the winning streak. Engle had six kills and Walsh had five kills, two blocks and a service ace. Govaars had 13 digs.

UD is now 16-5 overall and 5-2 in the CAA. The Hens will travel to Hofstra University for a game on Wednesday, Oct. 20.
