Delaware volleyball atop CAA standings

Taylor Govaars had 53 digs in two weekend victories for the Fightin’ Blue Hens.
10:26 a.m., Oct. 4, 2004--The University of Delaware volleyball team had a strong weekend homestand, defeating Colonial Athletic Association foes the College of William and Mary 3-2 on Friday and the University of North Carolina Wilmington 3-0 on Saturday.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 13-3 overall and are tied with Towson University atop the CAA standings at 3-0. UD will face Villanova University at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5, on Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

Against UNC Wilmington, Niecy Taylor and Valerie Murphy led the attack for the Hens, each posting 12 kills and four blocks. Taylor added three service aces.

Colleen Walsh and Sarah Engle had nine kills each, Taylor Govaars had 24 digs and Allison Lutz had 46 assists.

Against William and Mary, the Hens scored seven straight points to overcome an 8-6 deficit in the fifth and final game and secure a 3-2 victory.

Murphy and Engle each recorded a team-high 18 kills, and Engle added 14 digs. Nicole Stuka had 16 kills and 14 digs, Walsh had 12 kills, Govaars had 29 digs and Lutz had 60 assists.
