Lecture on women’s advancement set Oct. 21

11:57 a.m., Oct. 18, 2004--A lecture on the advancement of women, entitled “Why So Slow?,” is set for 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21, in 116 Gore Hall. Given by guest speaker Virginia Valian, distinguished professor of psychology and linguistics at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, the lecture will explore women’s traditionally lower-status roles in the workplace.

Valian, a cognitive scientist whose research ranges from first and second language acquisition to gender differences and gender equity, will discuss why so few women are at the top of their professions, and why this trend extends across the fields of science, law, medicine, college teaching, industry and business. Her lecture will present her research in psychology, sociology, economics and neuropsychology.
