First-ever Town Conversation set Nov. 10

11:46 a.m., Oct. 29, 2004--The Newark Town & Gown Committee will host the first Town Conversation, titled “Sharing Our Community,” at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 420 Willa Rd., off West Park Place behind West Park Elementary School.

The Town & Gown Committee is a group of city and UD officials dedicated to addressing issues affecting the campus and the community. The Town Conversation is an open forum designed for interested persons to express concerns and discuss the relationship between the city of Newark and the University of Delaware

“We hope that stakeholders in both communities will join us,” Ron Smith, chair of the Town & Gown Committee, said. “The Town & Gown Committee wants to be more active in fostering and maintaining a strong, positive relationship between Newark and the University. We see the Town Conversation as one way to do this.”

The Town Conversation will begin with refreshments and an informal meet-and-greet session from 7-7:30 p.m. Greg Chute, pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, will moderate the event.

“Our goal is for the members of the communities to feel that they are being heard regarding issues of concern, and we plan to make this a regular event to help keep the lines of communication open,” Smith said.

Students of April Veness, UD associate professor of geography, are assisting the Town & Gown Committee in its efforts. As part of her undergraduate course, “Newark, Delaware--People, Politics and Place,” Veness and her students have helped organize other similar events.
