Bell to toll for fallen firefighters

11:29 a.m., Oct. 1, 2004--In observance of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Co. on Academy Street in Newark will honor fallen firefighters at noon, Sunday, Oct. 3.

The local memorial service will be held at the siren tower adjacent to Fire Station 9, at the corner of Academy Street and East Delaware Avenue.

Fallen firefighters will be honored by the ringing one of the county’s few remaining fire bells. The large bell will be rung once as the name and fire department of each fallen firefighter is read aloud by members of the Aetna fire company, and the fire department’s chaplain will say a prayer.

The somber ringing of the fire apparatus bell, signal 5-5-5, which traditionally announces the coming home of a fallen firefighter, will conclude the service.
