UD junior Philip Wayne wins tennis championship

9:58 a.m., Oct. 20, 2004--University of Delaware junior Philip Wayne captured the men's Flight D-1 singles championship and the UD team of Susan Pollack and Sari Shuster advanced to the women's Flight A-1 doubles finals in the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational, held last weekend at Old Dominion University.

UD men advanced to the semifinals in four events, with Wayne winning a championship. He defeated Daniel Frid of American University 7-5, 6-3 in the first round, David Weiner of Christopher Newport University 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, John Hayashi of the U.S. Naval Academy 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals and Dan Davidson of James Madison University 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.

Also advancing to the semifinals were senior John Tully in Flight A singles, Wayne and Sammy Carl in Flight C doubles and Adam Freedenberg and Adam Liebman in Flight D doubles.

UD women advanced to the semifinals in three events. Pollack and Shuster defeated doubles teams from Lafayette College and Georgetown University before falling to Candice Fuchs and Megan Moulton-Levy of the College of William and Mary in the Flight A-1 doubles final.

Also for the Hens, Liz Perlow advanced to the Flight B-1 singles semifinals with wins over Ashley Reyher of James Madison and Jelena Zivanovic of the University of Richmond before falling to Fernada Luiz of Old Dominion 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. The loss to Luiz was Perlow's first of the season after starting out 13-0.

UD’s Julie Schiller advanced to the Flight D singles semifinals with wins over Adriana Segura of Hofstra University, Ayana Hipolite of Howard University and Eileen Boyle of Georgetown. She fell to Liz Dibbs of the University of Connecticut.

Pollack lost her first singles match of the season after going 11-0 when she fell to Lena Sherbakov of William and Mary in the first round of the Flight A singles competition.

UD will close out the fall schedule this week with both the men and women participating in Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional competition. The men will compete at Virginia Tech and the women at the University of Pennsylvania.
