Jim Crows Last Stand talk Tuesday 2:39 p.m., Oct. 25, 2004--Thomas Sugrue, Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss Jim Crows Last Stand: The Struggle for Civil Rights in the Suburban North, from 12:30-1:45 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 26, in 203 Munroe Hall, as part of UDs History Workshop in Technology, Society and Culture lecture series. The workshop is free and open to the public. The talk is based on Sugrues current book project, Sweet Land of Liberty: The Unfinished Struggle for Racial Equality in the North, to be published by Random House. Sugrues first book, The Origins of the Urban Crisis (1996), won the Bancroft Prize in American History and also won prizes from the Urban History Association, the Social Science History Association and the Labor History Association. The book also was selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Book. Essays by Sugrue have appeared in The Journal of American History, Labor History and The Journal of Urban History. Sugrue has edited, with Michael J. Katz, W.E.B. Dubois, Race, and the City: The Philadelphia Negro and its Legacy (1998). For more information, call (302) 831-3371.
