Dec. 3 art symposium free for students, faculty

9:02 a.m., Nov. 19, 2004--Free transportation, meals and admission to a special symposium honoring UD benefactor Paul R. Jones at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (DCCA) are being offered to all University students, faculty and staff, compliments of the DCCA.

Scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 3, at DCCA, the event is connected to the center’s current exhibit, Telling Tales: Narrative Threads in Contemporary African American Art, which features installations by Amalia Amaki, curator of the Paul R. Jones Colllection, and renowned contemporary African American artists Willie Cole and Mildred Howard.

The symposium, which will include a guided tour of A Century of African American Art: The Paul R. Jones Collection at UD in the morning, also will include a panel discussion with keynote guest speaker Sharon F. Patton, director of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art and a widely respected expert on African American art.

Free shuttle service from the University to the DCCA on Wilmington’s Riverfront will be provided and will depart from behind Old College at 11:30 a.m. Return service will depart from DCCA at 5 p.m.

A complimentary continental breakfast will be offered at UD in the morning, and a complimentary buffet-style lunch will be available at DCCA in the afternoon.

The event is cosponsored by UD and the DCCA. University art students and faculty are particularly encouraged to attend.

Reservations are requested by Monday, Nov. 22, and should be made by contacting Holly Bennett, curator of education at DCCA, via e-mail at [hbennett@thedcca.org] or by calling (302) 656-6466, the same number to call for more information about the symposium.
