UD swimming teams compete in CAA tri-meet

10:42 a.m., Nov. 8, 2004--The University of Delaware swimming and diving teams participated in a tri-meet against Colonial Athletic Association rivals Old Dominion University, the host team, and the College of William and Mary on Friday and Saturday.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens women’s team defeated Old Dominion 167-164 and fell to William and Mary 211.5-124.5 while the men’s team fell 240-94 to Old Dominion and 215-109 to William and Mary.

The women were led by senior Sara Stephens, who won the 200 butterfly in 2:07.61, the 100 butterfly in 57.58 and the 200 individual medley in 2:11.89. Stephens also teamed with freshman Ellen Heinz, junior Sara Reed and sophomore Kendall Warren as the UD 200 freestyle relay team finished second in 1:41.72.

Sophomore Meredith Law finished second in the 500 freestyle in 5:11.69 and was third in both the 1650 freestyle in 17:58.97 and the 400 individual medley in 4:45.95. Senior Kim Fields placed second in the 1650 freestyle in 17:52.53, while Heinz picked up UD’s other second-place finish by swimming the 100 freestyle in 55.09.

Reed was third in both the 200 freestyle in 1:57.60 and the 200 backstroke in 2:12.41, while Kristen Avioli finished third in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.42. The 200 medley relay team of Avioli, sophomore Miranda Conrad, Stephens and Reed was third in 1:55.55.

Sophomore Sarah Bergan led the UD divers by finishing third in both the 3-meter and the 1-meter events.

The UD men were paced by freshman Adam Blomberg, who won the 200 freestyle in 1:45.47 and the 500 freestyle 4:47.62, and finished third in the 200 butterfly in 1:59.55. Sophomore Joe Virion was second in the 1650 freestyle in 16:53.76 and third in the 500 freestyle in 4:54.07, while sophomore Brendan Spencer was second in the 100 backstroke in 55.91 and fourth in the 200 backstroke in 2:02.92.

The UD 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Andrew Zinn, junior Levan Beridze, freshman Roger Carman and Blomberg finished third in 1:29.72, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Beridze, Zinn, sophomore Max Evers and Blomberg finished third in 3:16.27.

Freshman diver Jeff Falini finished fourth in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter events.

Sophomore Cory Sanderson finished fourth in the 400 individual medley in 4:24.41.

The Hens will continue CAA action at Drexel University on Saturday, Nov. 13.
