Blue Hen swimmers sweep Georgetown

9:48 a.m., Oct. 21, 2004--The University of Delaware swimming and diving teams opened the 2004-05 season by sweeping host Georgetown University on Wednesday evening.

UD freshman Adam Blomberg won the 200 and 500 freestyle events, and sophomore Dan O'Connell swept both diving events to lead the Fightin’ Blue Hen men to a 139-102 victory.

Also for the UD men, Levan Beridze won the 100 freestyle, Troy Sattgast won the 100 butterfly and Joe Virion won the 1,000 freestyle.

Blomberg, Beridze, Andrew Zinn and Max Evers won the 200 freestyle relay.

UD senior Sara Stephens led the women to a 141.5-101.5 victory as she captured the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley.

Also for the UD women, Kristen Avioli won the 100 backstroke, Ellen Heinz won the 100 freestyle and Meredith Law won the 1,000 freestyle.

Stephens, Avioli, Heinz and Law won the 200 freestyle relay.

For the UD women, it was their sixth straight dual meet victory dating back to last season.

UD will return to action against George Mason University at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, at Rawstrom Pool in the Carpenter Sports Building.
