UD swimming teams open season at Georgetown 9:48 a.m., Oct. 20, 2004--The University of Delaware swimming and diving teams will open the 2004-05 season Wednesday, Oct. 20, when the Fightin Blue Hens take on host Georgetown University at 5 p.m. The meet will be the first of nine dual meets for the Hens over the course of the season, culminating in the annual Colonial Athletic Association championships Feb. 23-26 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The Hens will host George Mason University in their home opener at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, at Rawstrom Pool in the Carpenter Sports Building. UD Head Coach John Hayman will begin his 16th season at the helm of both the mens and the womens teams. He welcomes back 10 letter winners from the women's team and nine letter winners from the men's team. The UD women, who posted their third straight winning dual meet season a year ago with an 8-1 mark and placed fifth at the CAA championships, are led by senior Sara Stephens, the all-time record-holder in the 100 and 200 butterfly events. Stephens was a part of the CAA championship 400 medley relay team a year ago and was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's swimming. Also leading the Hens are senior Kristen Avioli, the school record holder in the 100 backstroke who won the CAA 400 medley relay a year ago, and Sara Reed and Meredith Law, who were part of the CAA champion 800 freestyle relay team. Freshman Ellen Heinz and transfer Kendall Warren will be the top newcomers. The UD men hope to improve upon last season's 2-7 dual meet record and 10th-place finish at the CAA championships. Leading the Hen men will be sophomores Cory Sanderson and Brendan Spencer, co-captain Adam Goldstein, and Rutgers University transfer Levan Beridze. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
