Online directory suggests UD students favor Kerry 7:25 p.m., Nov. 1, 2004--With the tight presidential race this year, voters 18-24, who historically have had the lowest voter turnout rates, could be decisive if they go to the polls in record-breaking numbers. Thefacebook [www.thefacebook.com], a national online directory, allows students to post pictures and profiles that connect them to friends and other students in their classes at their own colleges or universities. Students at UD who included their political orientation in their profiles on this web site, made it clear that they not only intend to vote, but they are likely to strongly support John Kerry over George Bush for president. Under the category of intended presidential vote, 65 percent of these UD students indicated they are voting for John Kerry, 32 percent said they are voting for George W. Bush and 1.4 percent said they intend to vote for Ralph Nader. Of the more than 2,000 UD students listed on this web site, 43 percent identify themselves as liberals, while only 16 percent say they are conservative. At the extremes, 7 percent consider themselves very liberal, and 1.5 percent are very conservative. Twenty-six percent of these UD students say they are moderate, while only 4 percent indicate they are apathetic. Article by Melissa Kadish, AS 05 To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
