Student being treated at Christiana Hospital 5:42 p.m., Nov. 10, 2004--A UD student being treated at Christiana Hospital has been diagnosed with meningococcemia, which is meningicoccus in his blood, the same bacteria that can cause meningococcal meningitis, according to Dr. Joseph Siebold, director of Student Health Services. The student is doing well and expected to recover fully. He lives off campus in Newark and has not had contact with anyone at UD since Oct. 30, Siebold said. Since he has not had contact with anyone in the University community in the last 11 days, the risk of anyone here being infected by him is extremely low, Siebold said. As a precautionary measure, members of his family, his apartment roommates and approximately 40 members of UDs mens rugby team--the last group he had contact with on campus in October--are being treated with antibiotics. Students with questions should contact Student Health Services at (302) 831-2226. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
