Check for software updates

11:02 a.m., Oct. 15, 2004--IT-User Services staff and CITAs in individual departments routinely remind computing users to keep their computers' operating systems and antivirus software up to date to protect everyone's data, individual computers and the University network.

"The recent announcement of updates from Microsoft that fix security vulnerabilities in MS Office and Windows should remind all of us to check all the software on our systems for updates on a regular basis," Ron Nichols, manager, IT-User Services, said. The vulnerabilities in MS Office affect both Windows and Macintosh users, Nichols said.

Windows XP and Windows 2000 users are advised that they should set up automatic operating system updates by following the directions at [www.udel.edu/topics/windowsxp/XPupdate.html].

Macintosh users should set Software Updates to happen automatically. This option is available from the System Preferences menu in MacOS X and from the Control Panel in MacOS 9. Setting this option allows computers to receive updates to their operating systems and certain utilities from Apple.

Windows and Macintosh users of Microsoft Office should periodically check Microsoft's Office web site [http://office.microsoft.com/] for updates. Follow the link marked “Check for Updates,” and follow the instructions at that site. Be sure to have the original Microsoft Office CD available. For more information on security issues with Microsoft software, visit [www.udel.edu/security/secms.html].

Windows users who install the University's copy of VirusScan 8 should automatically receive updates to their anti-virus software. If for some reason, that feature is turned off, it can be restarted by following the directions at [www.udel.edu/topics/virus/mcafee/win/check.html#v8].

Macintosh users of McAfee Virex software should follow the directions at [www.udel.edu/topics/virus/mcafee/mac/index.html] for using the eUpdate function to get updates to their computers' anti-virus software.

Users of other software should periodically check the software providers' web sites (or the web site of the University unit supporting that software) for updates, paying particular attention to updates that close security vulnerabilities. For example, RealPlayer users should periodically check University Media Services' web site for updates at [www.udel.edu/UMS/itv/realplayer/].
