Will the Red Sox owe it to the moon?

12:12 p.m., Oct. 27, 2004--If the Boston Red Sox triumph tonight, it will coincide with the first lunar eclipse during the Word Series. Might the moon have helped break the curse?

Harry Shipman, Annie Jump Cannon Professor of Astronomy at UD, said the last such coincidence occurred on the eve of the 1986 World Series, the last time the Red Sox made it to the World Series. The next two lunar eclipses in late October that will be visible in the evening in North America, Shipman said, will happen Oct. 30, 2050, and Oct. 30, 2069.

“I hope this doesn’t mean that the next time they win will be 2050,” Shipman said. “But I find it fascinating how rare an event this is.”

World Series games used to be played much earlier in October during the day, Shipman said.
