Arnold L. Lippert
 

April 15, 2005--The following tribute was presented by John L. Burmeister, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, at the General Faculty Meeting on April 11.

Arnold L. Lippert, a dean at the University from 1966 to 1976, passed away Nov. 10, 2004. Born in Kewanee, Ill., Nov. 12, 1910, he was a graduate of the University of Illinois, earning a bachelor of science degree with high honors in 1931. He later received a doctor of philosophy degree in chemistry from John Hopkins University in 1934.

In 1934, he was briefly employed as a research chemist by the DuPont Co. in Wilmington, Del. From there, he went to the Joseph Bancroft Co., first serving as chemical director, then as vice president and president. He was involved in the development of many special products—including “Everglaze,” “Minicare,” “Tutored,” “Bancare,” “Bancora,” “ Teutralized” and “ Banlon”—held numerous patents and authored many publications for the textile industry. From 1941-44, Lippert was chief of the dyestuff’s section of the Unites States War Production Board, serving in Washington, D.C., as a “Dollar-a-Year Man.” He was also chairman of the national committee of the dyestuff’s industry.

From 1966-71, he served as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware. He then served as the dean of the College of Graduate Studies and associate provost at the University from 1971-76. In 1990, Arnold received the State of Delaware Distinguished Service Award for his service on the Delaware Health Council. A longtime resident of Wilmington, Del., he and his wife moved in 1990 to Matthews, N.C., residing in the Plantation Estates community.

Lippert married Lela Bichell in 1936. His wife and three daughters survive him, as do nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He personified the description “a scholar and a gentleman.”

Nov. 12, 2004--Arnold Leroy Lippert, 93, former dean of UD’s College of Arts and Sciences and the then-College of Graduate Studies, died on Nov. 10.

Born in Kewanee, Ill., on Nov. 12, 1910, he was a Bronze Tablet graduate (in the top 1 percent) of the University of Illinois, earning a bachelor’s degree with high honors in 1931. He received a doctorate in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in 1934.

In 1934, he was briefly employed as a research chemist by the DuPont Co. in Wilmington and then went to the Joseph Bancroft Co., first as chemical director, then as vice president and president. He came to UD in 1966 as professor of chemistry and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, a post he held until 1971. He became dean of the then-College of Graduate Studies and associate provost in 1971, serving until he retired in 1976.

In 1990, Dr. Lippert received the state of Delaware’s Distinguished Service Award for his service on the Delaware Health Council.

He was also a member of the Corinthian Lodge #20 AF&AM of the Scottish Rite Consistory.

Dr. Lippert was a longtime resident of Wilmington and was a member and trustee of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In 1990, he and his wife, Lela, moved to Matthews, N.C., residing in the Plantation Estates community. He was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church there.

Dr. Lippert is survived by his wife and three daughters, Norma L. Kirkpatrick and her husband, Robert, of Monroe, N.C., Elizabeth L. Joesten and her husband, Burdette, of Southport, N.C., and Arlene L. Berg and her husband, Myron, of Seattle. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, William H. Cozart III, Lynn C. Schwartz, Arnold L. Cozart, Carrie C. Reinecke, Brian W. Joesten, Eric D. Joesten, Michael H. Berg, Bryan L. Berg and Howard S. Berg, and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Dr. Lippert will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, at Plantation Estates in Matthews, N.C. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn East in Matthews.
