UD student drives into train

7:10 p.m., Nov. 1, 2004--An intoxicated UD student drove his car through a train crossing gate and struck a passing CSX train at the crossing on North College Avenue at 4:24 a.m., Monday, Nov. 1.

The student, a 20-year-old junior, was alone in the car, and he was not injured. He was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, disregarding a train crossing signal and underage consumption of alcohol.

His car, a 2001 Volkswagen Passat, had severe damage to the front end. The train had minor damage on one of its rail cars.

The CSX crossing was closed for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Members of the University community are reminded to exercise extreme caution and observe train crossing signals. Trespassing on railroad property is both dangerous and illegal.
