CAA cites three from women’s soccer team

UD’s Shannon Alger
2:48 p.m., Nov. 5, 2004--Three members of the University of Delaware women’s soccer team have received post-season honors from the Colonial Athletic Association.

UD’s Shannon Alger, a junior midfielder, was named first team All-CAA, senior defender Christine Wrightson was named second team All-CAA and freshman forward Alli D’Amico was named to the CAA All-Rookie team.

Alger had four goals and five assists for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who finished the season 9-6-3. She scored two goals Oct. 15 as UD defeated Virginia Commonwealth University 2-1, earning its first victory ever over the Rams, and had an assist on the game-winning goal Oct. 17 as the Hens defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington 2-1.

For her play that weekend, Alger was named the CAA Player of the Week and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Player of the Week.

Wrightson led a UD defensive unit that allowed just 0.89 goals per game. She missed just three games during her four-year career with the Hens.

D’Amico had three goals and two assists for the Hens this season, scoring in back-to-back victories over the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Bowling Green University during the U.S. Naval Academy Tournament played Sept. 10-12. Following that tournament, she was named CAA Rookie of the Week.

Virginia Commonwealth junior midfielder Sandra Anger was selected the CAA Player of the Year.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin of George Mason University was named the Defensive Player of the Year, defender Marie Curtin of Hofstra University was named the Rookie of the Year and Joe Pereira of Old Dominion University was named the Coach of the Year.
