Alcohol-education campaign set Oct. 18-22 4:29 p.m., Oct. 15, 2004--Better Things To Do Week, a five-day alcohol-education campaign, is set to take place across the campus from Monday, Oct. 18, through Friday, Oct. 22. The campaign, which will include information fairs, lectures, documentary films and alcohol-free social events, is part of the Universitys ongoing effort to create a safe community and is designed to appeal to a broad range of students. The week will kick off with the Better Things To Do information fair, set to run from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 18, in the concourse in the Perkins Student Center. Free posters in the new UD series will be offered as giveaways while supplies last, and visitors who stop by will get a chance to meet the Better Things To Do cast of characters. The following schedule lists the other events planned for the week. Monday, Oct. 18 Behind Bars: The Alcohol Industry in Newark, Delaware, 8 p.m., in the New Castle Lounge of Central Complex, will officially kick off the Better Things To Do campaign. This news documentary project, produced in spring 2004 by students in UDs communication and political science departments, explores the alcohol industry and the local watering holes along Main Street. Bottoms Up, 8 p.m., in the three main lounges of Dickinson Complex, will provide an alcohol-free alternative to the traditional drinking game. Better Things To Do, 8 p.m., in Gilbert/Harrington Complex, will offer participants the opportunity to enter a six-week alcohol education campaign. Tuesday, Oct. 19 Drunk and Drugged Driving Information Fair, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in the concourse at the Perkins Student Center, will provide facts and statistics about alcohol consumption and driving. Wednesday, Oct. 20 (Love Your Body Day) The Body, Nutrition and Alcohol Connection Information Fair, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at Kiosk C in the Trabant University Center, will feature a video of what Barbie would look like if she were really human. Participants who stop by will receive a de-stress tool and information about alcohol and health. Myth America: The Truth Behind Beauty, a lecture, from noon-1 p.m., in 228 Purnell Hall, will feature speaker Michelle Filling, UD English instructor and former beauty pageant contestant. Filling will explore how beauty is defined in American culture and discuss how her involvement with the Miss America Pageant has affected her own perceptions and definitions of beauty. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Assess Your Drinking Behavior, from 1-3 p.m., in Room 205 in the Trabant University Center, will give students the opportunity to take stock of their alcohol consumption habits. Redefining Liberation: Reclaiming Liberation from Media Distortions, a workshop, from 3-4:30 p.m., in 240 Alison Hall, will address how advertising can be harmful to women and will trace the evolution of liberation from standards set by the media. A short film will aid participant discussion of overt and covert messages on alcohol, tobacco and body image. Yoga, a self-care workshop, from 6-7 p.m, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center, will offer instruction in simple breathing and stretching techniques for relaxation and stress management. Belly dancing, a self-care workshop, from 6-7 p.m., in the Gallery of the Perkins Student Center, will offer a light-hearted hour of instruction in the sinuous Middle Eastern dance form. All participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing and to bring a scarf to tie around their hips. Self-massage and aromatherapy, a hands-on, self-care workshop, from 7-8 p.m., in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center, will offer tips in massage techniques and the use of essential oils. 28 Days, a film screening, from 8-10 p.m., in 206 Kirkbride, tells the story of a high-powered career woman who must enter a rehab clinic for alcoholism. The film will be preceded by a short presentation on alcohols effects on the body. Thursday, Oct. 21 Reality Check: Alcohol Advertising and Marketing Information Fair, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Concourse in the Perkins Student Center, will provide tips on how to be media savvy and aware of tactics used by high-powered advertising campaigns that dont have consumers best interests in mind. Behind Bars: The Alcohol Industry in Newark, Delaware, from 7-8:30 p.m., in 102 Gore Hall, is a news documentary project produced in spring 2004 by students in UDs communication and political science departments that explores the alcohol industry and the local watering holes along Main Street. Friday, Oct. 22 Get the Facts: Alcohol and Sex Information Fair, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at Kiosk C in the Trabant University Center, will provide facts and debunk myths about alcohols effect on sexual performance. Prizes will be given away while supplies last. The Sixth Annual Get Wacky Not Wasted! event from 8 p.m.-midnight, at the Perkins Student Center will cap the week and offer a fun-filled evening of alcohol-free activities, including drumming circles, acupuncture, henna tattooing, tie-dying, billiards, air hockey, hackeysack and juggling.
