UD basketball teams open this weekend 9:01 a.m., Nov. 19, 2004--The 2004-05 University of Delaware basketball season will open this weekend, with the mens team traveling to Ohio State University for a game Friday evening and the womens team at home for a game against Loyola College of Maryland on Sunday afternoon. The UD men will battle Ohio State of the powerful Big 10 Conference at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19, in Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State has opened the season 2-0, with victories over Robert Morris University and Towson University, which, like UD, is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Buckeyes are led by first-year coach Thad Matta and feature four returning starters in 6-foot, 9-inch center Terence Dials, forward J.J. Sullinger and guards Tony Stockman and Brandon Fuss-Cheatham. New to the team is freshman point guard Jamar Butler, Ohios Mr. Basketball last season. Probable starters for Head Coach David Hendersons Fightin Blue Hens are center Raphael Madera, forwards Harding Nana and Robin Wentt, shooting guard Andrew Washington and veteran point guard Mike Slattery. Slattery is a preseason first team All-CAA selection and one of the most productive point guards in the nation. Washington, a transfer from Allen County Community College in Kansas, had an auspicious debut for UD, scoring 31 points in a 100-62 exhibition victory over Widener University. Also expected to get playing time for UD, which has a thin bench due to injuries, are forwards Calvin Smith, Lebo Maepa and Octavius Flowers and guards Rulon Washington and freshman Sam McMahon. The last time the Hens faced Ohio State was in 1960, when the fourth-ranked Buckeyes won 109-38. UD is 0-6 all-time against Big Ten teams. Head Coach Tina Martins womens team will open its season at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, in the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center against Loyola College. The Hens feature the preseason CAA Player of the Year in senior forward Tiara Malcom, who scored 27 points in a 74-66 exhibition win against the national team from the Netherlands. Two other seniors, Julie Sailer and Tiffany Young, provide UD a great deal of experience on the floor. The Hens have a wealth of talent in the backcourt, with junior guard Amanda Blackstone and sophomores Alena Koshansky, Liz Hayes and Tyresa Smith. Loyola returns 12 players, including center Robbyn Poole and All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference forward Katie Scherle, who scored 11.5 points and had 6.2 rebounds per game last season. Guard Krystle Harrington will handle the point. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
