Milton Gabriel Young
 

Oct. 27, 2005--Milton Gabriel Young, 93, of Alexandria, Va., a former long-term resident of Newark, died July 17.

Born Nov. 29, 1911, in Coopersburg, Pa., Prof. Young graduated from Lehigh University in 1932 and earned his master of science degree in physics from Harvard University a year later.

Prof. Young moved to Newark in 1940 to become a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Delaware and later became chairperson of the electrical engineering department. In 1952, he wrote a textbook, Fundamentals of Electronics and Control, with Dr. Harry Bueche.

In 1956, Prof. Young took his family to Pilani, India, for one year to establish a graduate program in Electronic Principles and Components at the Birla College of Engineering. He had a home and farm in Bethany Beach for many years and retired in 1973.

After his retirement, Prof. Young and his wife, Elizabeth, enjoyed extensive travel, gardening and tailgating at University of Delaware football games. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newark. Elizabeth died in 1995. Prof. Young moved to Annapolis, Md., in 2000 and to Alexandria, Va., in 2005.

In addition to his wife, Prof. Young was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael W. Manning, in 1996. He is survived by his three children: daughter Peggy Young, and her husband, Jim Stimpson, of Alexandria, Va.; son Robert Young and his wife, Robin, of Boise, Idaho; and son Alex Young and his wife, Marge, of Savannah, Ga. He has five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on July 23 at the First Presbyterian Church on West Main Street in Newark.
