Robert Wood Shockley
 

June 23, 2005--Robert Wood Shockley, 77, of Salisbury, Md., died May 13 at his home.

Born in Nashville, Mr. Shockley graduated from P.S. du Pont High School in Wilmington and studied chemical engineering at the University of Delaware.

He began his career in the industrial service division of Dow Chemical Corp. in 1952 and worked for several chemical companies, including American Cyanamid Co. and Calgon Corp. For six years, he ran his own industrial chemical cleaning company, Shockley Engineering Co.

Mr. Shockley moved to Salisbury in 1981 when he became district manager for Chemtreat Inc. After his retirement from Chemtreat in 1996, he worked for Salisbury State University as an environmental engineer for five years.

He was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Dowd Shockley of Salisbury; three children and their spouses, Lynne Shockley Wingard and Dr. Charles M. Wingard of Osterville, Mass., Robert Wood Shockley Jr. and Lucy Hoffman Shockley of Cary, N.C., and Clare Shockley Wall and Christopher E. Wall of Ocean City, Md.; five grandchildren, Thomas Dowd Prettyman of Salisbury, Md., John Howlett Prettyman of Osterville, Mass., Sara Anne Shockley, Robert Wood Shockley III and Matthew Joseph Shockley, all of Cary, N.C.; two brothers, H. William Shockley of Savannah and Richard Lee Shockley of Evans, Ga.; a sister, Sybil Shockley Curtain of Worton, Md.; and nine nieces and nephews.
