Wilbert T. Shanor
 

11:11 a.m., May 30, 2005--Wilbert T. Shanor, 80, of Newark, died May 25.

At the University of Delaware, Mr. Shanor served as executive assistant to the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and he retired as assistant provost in budget.

Born in New Brighton, Pa., he served as a first lieutenant of the Army Air Corps flying a P-47 in 30 combat missions during World War II. In recognition for his courage and heroism, he received the Purple Heart twice, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Battle Stars and the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1955.

After graduating from Montana State University, he worked with the Boy Scouts for a year before taking a position in personnel with the Diamond Shamrock Company in Ohio. He also volunteered as a firefighter and acted as treasurer for the Mentor Headlands Fire Department and was president of the Mentor Headlands Little League.

He served as president of the Newark Kiwanis Club. Throughout his retirement, he remained active in the community serving as president of the Southridge Condominium Association.

Mr. Shanor dedicated his later life to volunteering for the Newark Senior Center and was instrumental in raising the funds for its new location, acting as co-chair with his wife for the memberships gifts campaign.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Georgia Cornelius Shanor; daughter, Barbara Hossain Witcher, and her husband, Murray; son, Daniel Shanor; daughter, Sue Meixell, and her husband, Hugh; daughter, Carol Gregg, and her husband, Butch; son, Mark Shanor, and his wife, Rhonda; family friend Zakir Hossain; 10 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, June 1, at the Newark Senior Center, 200 White Chapel Drive, Newark.
