CBS crew learns about rip currents

James Kirby, right, and Jack Puleo are interviewed on the beach
at the wave tank by Sharyn Alfonsi of CBS.
11:12 a.m., June 16, 2005--A CBS News crew was on campus this week to interview researchers at the University of Delaware’s Center for Applied Coastal Research for a story on rip currents that is scheduled to air on The Early Show at 7:40 a.m., Friday, June 17.

CBS reporter Sharyn Alfonsi discussed rip currents with James T. Kirby, Edward C. Davis Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Jack A. Puleo, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering. The UD researchers then gave a demonstration of the power of rip currents using the center’s wave tank.

Also on hand for the taping was Wendy Carey, a coastal processes specialist for the UD Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service who has been active in the national “Break the Grip of the Rip” campaign sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the United States Lifesaving Association.
