Prof. Pika recognized for outstanding service
The Arts and Sciences Outstanding Service Award is given for extraordinary service within the college, University, academic profession and larger community. The selection is made in recognition of awards, testimonials from colleagues and the candidates demonstrated impact on the quality and effectiveness of the college. James Magee, department chairperson, said, His service record is one of widespread dedication on every tier within the University, from serving on the UD Board of Trustees to advising registered student organizations. Beyond the University, he's been, for almost two decades, one of Delaware's most admired and prominent public servants who has devoted much of his time to making Delaware a better place to live, in particular his eight years on the State Board of Education. Appointed to the State Board of Education by Gov. Tom Carper in 1997, he became its president in 2001. Joe has steered Delaware's educational system to harmonious and fair resolutions of some very contentious issues, Magee said. Congratulations to Joe for a richly deserved honor from the college. Pika joined the faculty in 1981 after teaching at the State University of New York in Buffalo. He received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Johns Hopkins University and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While at Wisconsin, he received the Chancellors Award for Teaching Excellence. At UD, he received the excellence-in-teaching and excellence-in-advising awards in 1987 and 1992, respectively. Pika served as chair of the political science and international relations department from 1994-99 and was faculty director of the Delaware Social Studies Education Project from 1999-2001. He has written two books on the U.S. presidency and numerous articles on the office of the presidency. In 1993, Pika served as executive director of the Governor's Commission on Government Reorganization and Effectiveness, a statewide effort focused on reinventing ways to conduct public business.
