10:55 a.m., June 23, 2005--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, staff and alumni:

Irene S. Davis, professor of physical therapy, was quoted in a June 23 New York Times story about developments in running shoes and in the new trend of “shoeless” running. "The technological advancements over the past 30 years have been amazing," Davis, who directs the UD Running Injury Clinic, told the Times. "We've seen tremendous innovations in motion control and cushioning. And yet the remedies don't seem to defeat the ailments."

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a June 23 Associated Press story on new restrictions on the use of corporate jets by executives at General Electric. Elson said he favors a ban on the use of corporate jets for personal trips. "Fly to any large resort town--you'll see the corporate aircraft lined up," he told the AP.

Mark J. Miller, Emma Smith Morris Professor of Political Science and International Relations, was featured in a June 23 News Journal story about targets for terrorists in Delaware. "We're very tiny, but we're very important in terms of the whole economy," Miller said. "You can see how it would be an inviting area for al-Qaida or another like-minded group."

The new book by Gary May, professor of history, titled The Informant: The FBI, the Ku Klux Klan and the Murder of Viola Liuzzo, was reviewed in the June 22 Boston Globe. The reviewer said May is a “riveting storyteller, conveying a deep understanding of the times and their passions.”
