Commencements past

7 p.m., May 28, 2005--Marshals were on the front line at Commencement to help participants and visitors and to make sure everything went smoothly on this milestone day for graduates and their families.

The more than 40 volunteer marshals represented all groups on campus--faculty, staff and students--and performed the many tasks that were essential when approximately 21,000 persons gathered at the Delaware Stadium for Commencement exercises, according to Nancy Millard, assistant director of alumni relations, who coordinated the marshals. The marshals seated guests, helped those with special needs, distributed programs, staffed information tables and helped organize the procession, seating graduates and alumni delegates.

Each year, e-mail is sent to UD students and staff asking them to sign up for jobs that need to be filled at Commencement, Millard said. “Everyone but faculty, who are already involved in the ceremony, gets e-mail messages, including campus tour guides, cheerleaders, Ag Ambassadors and all offices on campus.”

There also were five faculty University Marshals in academic regalia, who led alumni delegates, graduate and platform party processionals.
