Greeks raise $1,276 for Katrina relief 2:02 p.m., Sept. 30, 2005--Greek organizations across the campus joined together at Lettuce Feed You restaurant in Newark on Sept. 22 to raise $1,276.30 for Paskagoula, a town in Mississippi struck by Hurricane Katrina. Jill Jackson, president of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and an employee of Lettuce Feed You, said the event came together when her boss Peter Weisbord asked if her sorority would like to help put together a fund-raiser for the Hurricane Katrina victims. Jackson said her sorority and Phi Sigma Sigma, Chi Omega, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Kappa, Alpha Phi, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Zi Delta, Delta Gamma, Sigma Alpha, Tau Epsilon Phi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Theta Chi, Kappa Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Alpha Mu were more than willing to help. After meeting with the Lettuce Feed You owner, and UD fraternity and sorority leaders, Jackson said they decided to put together a day at the restaurant where 20 percent of the profits would go to Katrina victims. They also decided to have a bucket for donations during the fund-raiser, she said. Weisbord agreed to match all donations in the bucket at the end of the day. The Off Campus Meal Plan also chipped in by waiving the standard fee that day for establishments that are part of the plan, Jackson said. This allowed Lettuce Feed You and the Greek organizations to collect the full 20 percent donation from the customers using this plan. I am thrilled that Theta was able to support this event, Jackson said. I personally appreciate all of my sisters and other organizations who were at the event and who so willingly jumped in on the idea when it first came up. The Greeks also worked together to advertise the fund-raiser, Jackson said. They rallied their organizations to come to Lettuce Feed You on the day of the event, distributed flyers to let people on campus and in dorms know about it and sent representatives to thank people for coming. Jackson said they decided to send their donations to the same town the city of Newark has adopted. One of the Newark Town Council members had stopped by Greek Council and mentioned that the town of Newark had adopted this town in Mississippi that was approximately the same size as Newark, she said. We viewed this as the perfect opportunity to not only help out the hurricane relief effort but work with the town of Newark, as well.
