William Latham, associate professor of economics, was quoted in an Oct. 21 News Journal story about workers’ compensation costs in the state.

Louis Hirsh, director of admissions, was quoted in an Oct. 20 USA Today story about the growing percentage of women among students enrolled in America’s colleges and universities.

Patrick Gaffney, professor of marine studies, was quoted in an Oct. 19 News Journal story about Delaware’s battered oyster industry. Gaffney is working to map the genes of oysters.

Nancy Cotugna, professor of nutrition and dietetics, was quoted in an Oct. 18 News Journal story about growing interest in vegetarianism.

Norman Ness, who recently retired as a professor in UD’s Bartol Research Institute, was quoted in an Oct. 18 Agence France Press story about a new map of Mars that provides evidence of plate tectonics such as found on Earth. Also, Ness was featured in an Oct. 20 News Journal story.

April Veness, associate professor of geography, was quoted in an Oct. 17 News Journal story about Guatemalan immigrants.

Debra Hess Norris, Henry Francis du Pont Chair in Fine Arts, was quoted in an Oct. 17 News Journal story about art conservators assisting along the hurricane-stricken Gulf Coast.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair of Corporate Governance and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in an Oct. 17 Wall Street Journal story on advances in corporate disclosure. He was quoted in an Oct. 18 Reuters story about Refco and an Oct. 16 News Journal story on the anniversary of the Disney Co. trial. Elson also was quoted in two stories in a special issue of the magazine Corporate Board Member. Elson was quoted in stories on executive sessions and the retreat of imperial chief executive officers. In addition, Elson was quoted in an Oct. 12 Newark Star-Ledger story on Computer Horizons shareholders, in an Oct. 8 New York Times story concerning a lawsuit by News Corp. investors, and in an Associated Press story concerning an initial public offering by the health information company WebMD.

John Byrne, director of UD’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, and Wendy Carey, specialist in marine studies, were quoted in an Oct. 16 News Journal story about the state’s receding coastline.

Russell Dynes, professor emeritus of sociology and founding director of UD’s Disaster Research Center, was quoted in an Oct. 16 New Orleans Times Picayune story about Gulf Coast residents rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, was featured Oct. 14 on the WHYY-FM Radio Times program. Khan also was quoted in an Oct. 15 York (Pa.) Daily Record story about Ramadan.

Balaji Panchapakesan, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, was featured in an Oct. 14 United Press International report for his research into a cancer-killing nanobomb.

Ismat Shah, professor of materials science and engineering, was quoted in an Oct. 12 News Journal story about the earthquake that struck his native Pakistan. UD’s Pakistani Students’ Association is planning an aid drive.

Michael Middaugh, assistant vice president for institutional research and planning, was quoted in an Oct. 10 Chronicle of Higher Education online story concerning university disaster plans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Saul Hoffman, chairperson of the Department of Economics, was quoted in an Oct. 8 News Journal story about the impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the local construction industry.

Ed Whereat, program coordinator in the College of Marine Studies, was quoted in an Oct. 7 News Journal story on a fish kill in a lagoon off Indian River Bay.

David W. Smith, associate professor of biological sciences, was cited in an Oct. 6 News Journal story. Smith was presented the annual Bob Davids Award given by the Society for American Baseball Research for his work with Retrosheet, a volunteer effort to collect information on Major League Baseball games.

Frederick Nelson, professor of geography, was quoted in an Oct. 5 San Diego Union-Tribune story about how shrub growth on Alaska’s North Slope may be contributing to Arctic warming and to shifts in wildlife habitat.

Richard Wool, professor of chemical engineering, and UD doctoral student Lin Zhu were featured in an Oct. 3 Chemical & Engineering News story concerning advances in green polymers.
