UD in the News, July 27, 2005 To view past UD in the News, click here. 10:08 a.m., July 27, 2005--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, staff and alumni. Michael Middaugh, assistant vice president for institutional research and planning and the incoming president of the Society for College and University Planning, was featured on the July 27 Inside Higher Ed web site. Middaugh discussed a research project in which he studies costs of operating different academic departments in colleges and universities. Jason Beaulieu, recently appointed UDs strength and conditioning coach, was featured in the July 27 News Journal. Beaulieu, a UD graduate, described himself as a hands on coach. Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in the July 26 Los Angeles Daily News and Los Angeles Business Journal and by the Bloomberg news service concerning changes in management at DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. He also was quoted in a July 25 Los Angeles Times story on a change in style at the California Public Employees' Retirement System. Jamie MacMahan, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, was quoted in a July 26 Los Angeles Times story on rip currents. MacMahan has actually jumped into rip currents around the world to better understand how they work. Bill Hall, education specialist with the UD Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service, was quoted in a July 26 News Journal story on Indian River High School biology teacher Todd Fritchman, the recipient of the 2005 Governor's Marine Science Teacher of the Year Award. Ed Freel, policy scientist in the Institute for Public Administration, was quoted in a July 25 News Journal column on the Democracy Project at UD. Laurence Kalkstein, senior research fellow in the UD Center for Climatic Research, was featured in a July 24 ABC World News Tonight report on the current heat wave. Kalkstein developed a heat-health warning system now in use in 17 cities. Amalia Amaki, curator of the Paul R. Jones Collection, was featured in a July 24 Atlanta Journal Constitution story on the Dark Roots exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. She is curator of the exhibition. Deni Galileo, assistant professor of biological sciences, wrote an article in the July 19 News Journal concerning collaborative research efforts between UD and Christiana Care and its Helen F.
