UD in the News, July 22, 2005 To view past UD in the News, click here. 1:35 p.m., July 22, 2005--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, staff and alumni. Mark Greene, assistant professor of philosophy, was quoted in a July 22 Baltimore Sun story concerning the debate over the risks of planting human neural cells into the brains of nonhuman primates. Greene was lead author of an article on the topic in a recent issue of the journal Science. UD President David P. Roselle, John Bishop, associate vice president for counseling and student development, and Steve Martin, senior scientist with the UD Center for Drug and Alcohol Studies, were quoted in a July 21 News Journal story on a $1.2 million federal grant awarded the University by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The funds will be used to combat underage drinking and drug abuse by promoting innovative screening, brief interventions and referral to treatment of those students with a high risk of substance abuse disorders. Stories about the grant also were broadcast by radio stations WDEL-AM and WILM-AM. Janice Seitz, associate dean in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, was quoted in a July 21 News Journal article on the 90th anniversary of Cooperative Extension. Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a July 20 Chicago Sun-Times story concerning a large payout to the former chief executive of May Department Stores. Elson also was quoted in a July 19 Boston Globe story on the fallout from a lavish party thrown for a Fidelity Investments trader. Laurence Kalkstein, senior research fellow in the UD Center for Climatic Research, was cited in a July 19 Sacramento Bee story on beating the summer heat. Neil Lanctot, a history faculty member and author of the book Negro League Baseball: The Rise and Ruin of a Black Institution, was quoted in a July 19 Delaware County Times story about the Hilldale team that competed in the Negro Leagues. Barbara Necarsulmer, associate state director of UDs Delaware Small Business Development Center, was quoted in a July 18 News Journal story on the use of credit cards by small business owners. "Credit cards are easy, and that's the benefit. But, it's also the risk," Necarsulmer said.
