12:13 p.m., July 14, 2005--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, staff and alumni:

Benigno Aguirre, professor of sociology with the UD Disaster Research Center, was quoted in a July 14 Numbers Guy column in the Wall Street Journal. The column concerned speculation about casualties at New York’s World Trade Center had the Sept. 11 terrorists struck later in the day when more workers would have been in the twin towers. Aguirre discussed the dynamics of groups in evacuations, saying, "The larger the group, the more they care for others in the group, the more they like others, the longer it takes to evacuate."

Charles Epifanio, professor of marine studies, was quoted in a July 13 News Journal story concerning a waterman who discovered an albino blue crab off Blackbird Creek.

Robert B. Barker, director of corporate relations and career management in UD’s master of business administration program, was quoted in a July 13 News Journal story about hiring at MBNA America as the company prepares for a takeover by Bank of America.

Richard Taylor, a Cooperative Extension agronomy specialist, was quoted in a July 12 News Journal story on soybean production in the state.

John Byrne, director of the UD Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, was quoted in a July 11 Voice of America report concerning the coming Congressional debate on national energy policy. "Our decisions affect not only the U.S. economy but the world economy, as well, due to globalization," Byrne said, adding the energy debate should be recast by moving away from the current approach “that depends on industry stakeholders deciding what is best."

Raymond Nichols, professor of fine art and visual communications, and William Deering, assistant professor of fine art and visual communications, were featured in a report July 11 on WHYY-TV’s Delaware Tonight news program concerning UD students who were studying in London at the time of the terrorist attacks. They also were featured July 13 News Journal story.

John Ewart, aquaculture specialist in the College of Marine Studies, was quoted in a July 11 Cape Gazette story about oyster gardening in the state’s inland bays.

Mark J. Miller, Emma Smith Morris Professor of Political Science and International Relations, was quoted in a July 11 News Journal story about the terrorist attacks in London. "This is the future," Miller said. "The British have a pretty good antiterrorism record. London is a very symbolic city. But, we're very vulnerable [here], too. All of society, especially industrial societies, are very vulnerable to this violence. It's a fact of life, and I expect this situation to endure the rest of my life."

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Business Week story concerning the realities of modern journalism, in which newspapers and other media outlets are owned by large corporations and so face special financial pressures. The story was based on the decision by Time Inc. to hand over notes by reporter Matthew Cooper to a federal grand jury. “This is a tough one,” Elson said, “but you have to comply with the law.” Elson also was quoted in a July 8 Financial Times story about difficulties at Morgan Stanley as a result of lucrative, and guaranteed, pay packages given top executives.

Elson, along with Donald J. Puglisi, MBNA America Professor Emeritus of Business, and Carol Hoffecker, Richards Professor Emerita of History, were quoted in a July 10 News Journal story about MBNA America and its legacy in the wake of the announcement of its proposed acquisition by Bank of America.

Gary May, professor of history, received a favorable review for his new book titled The Informant: The FBI, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Murder of Viola Liuzzo in the July 3 issue of the Washington Post Book World. Reviewer Jonathan Yardley wrote that May’s “fine book” serves to bring back “that dreadful time with all too much verisimilitude and tells, in exemplary fashion, a cautionary tale of real importance.” May fielded questions from Washington Post Book World Live readers online on July 5.
