New antivirus software available to UD users

4:10 p.m., Aug. 26, 2004--UD computer users with Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows NT operating systems can now download McAfee VirusScan 8, new antivirus software that safeguards against a greater number of other problem files and programs.

“In addition to looking for viruses, worms and Trojan horse programs, the copy of VirusScan 8 we are making available for the University community will seek out seven different kinds of ‘spyware’ that can interfere with your computer’s operation,” Beth Miller, IT-User Services, said.

Instructions for downloading VirusScan 8 are available at [www.udel.edu/topics/virus/mcafee].

“We urge all University students, faculty and staff to download and install the new software as soon as they can,” Miller said. “The University has a campus-wide license for this software—so there’s no additional cost for installing this important upgrade.”

Miller said the University version of VirusScan 8 would automatically perform the following functions:

  • Scan the computer for viruses weekly;
  • Check for updates to VirusScan daily (for networked computers left on all the time);
  • Check for updates to VirusScan when a networked computer is turned on; and
  • Check for updates when a dial-up connection is established.

“It is critical that all computers be protected against intrusions, and, since there’s no additional cost, this is an upgrade that all users should make as soon as possible,” Miller said.

The University also makes McAfee VirusScan 4.5 available for Windows 98 and ME computers and McAfee Virex 7.2 available for Macintosh users. For more information about all virus protection software available to the University community, visit [www.udel.edu/topics/virus/mcafee].

To report virus-related problems with a computer, contact the IT-Help Center at (302) 831-6000, or via e-mail at [consult@udel.edu].
