UD hosts learning vacations

11:43 a.m., July 19, 2004--In cooperation with the nationwide educational tour network TraveLearn, UD’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies has announced its 2004-05 schedule of learning vacations.

TraveLearn's carefully planned “classroom-in-the-field” trips allow participants to learn firsthand about the history, art, culture and customs of the country visited. Upcoming programs are slated for Alaska, Australia, Central Europe, China, Egypt, Galapagos Islands and Ecuador, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Morocco, Peru, Spain and Turkey. Trips are designated for adult participants only, or for families and intergenerational groups.

TraveLearn trips feature onsite lectures, seminars and field experiences provided by faculty escorts and in-country specialists, as well as “people-to-people” contact, to foster insight and understanding of foreign cultures not available on more conventional tours.

Below are examples of the diverse learning vacations offered.

  • Trips to Alaska include several distinct itineraries for Coastal Odyssey, Inside Passage, Wilderness Waterways and Bering Sea Exploration Voyage.
  • The Central Europe tour features Berlin, Prague, Krakow and Budapest, a dinner cruise on the Danube, exploration of Prague architecture, a Chopin recital in Krakow and more.
  • A trip to Ireland includes an overnight stay in a castle, a play in a Dublin theater, visits to makers of Irish crystal, china and textiles, visits to two of Ireland's finest castles, the restored Castle of Cahir and ancient Rock of Cashel, and many other sites highlighting Ireland's landscapes and history.
  • The Kenya trips feature game-watching safaris, highlighting the country’s rich concentration of wildlife and visits to the famous Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Kenya's finest wildlife sanctuary, the Masai Mara National Reserve. The itinerary also explores the rich cultural traditions of the diverse peoples of Kenya.

Accommodations are first-class, meals are included and groups are small so participants receive individualized attention from tour leaders and can appreciate the group camaraderie. Group size averages about 14 participants per trip, with some groups as small as 8 members, but never exceeding 20.
