Literacy institute concludes with workshop previews

4:30 p.m., July 21, 2004--Ten teachers from across Delaware presented their plans for improving reading and writing skills in children from kindergarten through 12th grade during Preview Day, the final phase of this year’s Delaware Writing Project (DWP) and Delaware Reading Project (DRP) Summer Invitational Institute, Wednesday, July 21, at Postlethwait Middle School in Camden. Administrators from across the state attended to learn about the institute workshops that will be available to schools for in-service presentations.

The Delaware Reading and Writing Project is a consortium of teachers cosponsored by the University of Delaware, the state Department of Education and Delaware school districts.

The summer institute culminated in the preview, which detailed the newest DWP and DRP workshops available for in-service presentations for the 2004-05 school year.

Workshops presented included:

  • “Think-Aloud Strategies: Showing Students What Good Readers Do”;
  • “Giving Students a Voice: Moving Beyond Five-Paragraph Formula Writing”;
  • “Building a Community of Readers Through Flexible Grouping”;
  • “Constructing Individual Voice: Practical Strategies to Teach Focused Revision”;
  • “Scaffolding Instruction to Improve Text-Based Writing”;
  • “You Can Get There From Here: Connecting Comprehension Strategies to Writing About Text”;
  • “Writers’ Workshop: Organizing and Motivating Young Writers (and Their Teachers)”;
  • “Differentiated Instruction: Promoting Diversity in a Reading Classroom”;
