Blue Hens hold final scrimmage of preseason

12:04 p.m., Aug. 24, 2004--With the season opener fast approaching, the University of Delaware football team held its second and final preseason scrimmage under the lights at Delaware Stadium on Monday night as several hundred True Blue fans looked on.

The defending NCAA Division I-AA national champion Fightin’ Blue Hens ran through about 50 plays during the 45-minute scrimmage.

Head Coach K.C. Keeler’s team will practice each of the next four days before breaking preseason camp on Saturday. The team then will begin preparations for the opener to be played at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 2, at Delaware Stadium against the University of New Hampshire. The Wildcats narrowly lost to UD last season when a late field goal try went just wide.

“Tonight's scrimmage was about a lot of things,” Keeler said. “We wanted to get a feel for what the time frame of a game would be and what it's going to be like when we play New Hampshire. We did the pre-game meal and got a chance to play under the lights. We also wanted to see some intensity and I was happy with some of the things I saw.”

The scrimmage was played without 11 regulars who sat out with various nagging injuries, none considered serious. Among the missing were running backs Sean Bleiler and Niquan Lee; center Chris Edwards; wide receivers Justin Long, David Boler and Joe Bleymaier; defensive linemen Tom Parks, Lou Samba and Ben Cross; and defensive backs Sidney Haugabrook and Zach Thomas.

Among the highlights of the scrimmage were a 60-yard run by redshirt freshman running back Lonnie Starks, a short touchdown run by Anthony Cinelli and big hits from senior defensive tackle Chris Mooney and freshman cornerback Omar Cuff.
