Student Services for Athletes names Roche assistant director

Deborah Roche
9:01 a.m., July 28, 2004--Deborah Roche has been named assistant director of University of Delaware Student Services for Athletes, the UD athletics department announced Tuesday, July 27.

Roche, 30, will assist Student Services for Athletes Director Tim Morrissey in providing academic, career and personal counseling to UD scholar-athletes. She replaces Amy Carello, who served in the program for four years.

Roche will coordinate the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program, serve as an advisor to the Student Athlete Advisory Council, assist with the Helping Each Newcomer Succeed (HENS) program and teach freshman seminar classes.

Roche earned her bachelor's degree in English and psychology from the University of Maryland in 1996 and her doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Buffalo in 2003.

She served as program coordinator for the Annapolis (Md.) Community Partnership from 1996-98, directing after-school programs and providing tutoring and other education programming for at-risk inner city youth. She also served as program coordinator for People Against Child Abuse.

During the summers of 2002 and 2003, Roche was a pre-doctoral intern at the University of Pennsylvania's Counseling and Psychological Services office and provided therapy and outreach to the community. She also participated in summer rotation with the Drexel University athletics department, providing continuing education workshops for coaches.

While at the University of Buffalo, Roche served as a graduate assistant in the Office of Athlete Academic Services and worked closely with the men's and women's swimming and diving teams and the wrestling team. She served as a liaison between athletics and the University Counseling Center and provided workshops on sports psychology issues to coaches and trainers.

Roche joined UD’s Center for Counseling and Student Development in fall 2003 and participated in an externship with Student Services for Athletes, providing academic counseling and consultation to athletes and coaches and teaching freshman seminar.

Roche is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport.
