'U.S. News' ranks UD 26th among top public schools 5:24 p.m., Aug. 20, 2004--The University of Delaware is ranked 26th among the nation's top public universities in U.S. News and World Report's 2005 America's Best Colleges issue. UD rose one spot in the ranking of public universities since last year, moving from 27th. Topping the public universities was the University of California-Berkeley, followed by the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia, the University of California-Los Angeles and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. UD also is ranked 66th among all national universities, both public and private, also up one notch from the 2004 rankings. Harvard and Princeton share the No. 1 ranking and are trailed by the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. UD shares the 66th rank with the universities of Connecticut, Minnesota-Twin Cities and Pittsburgh. In a special section on programs believed to result in student success, UD was recognized for its outstanding undergraduate research program. A related article on undergraduate research quoted Annie Steadman, a senior philosophy major who has co-authored two journal articles on the theory of intentional action with a professor. She said, When I'm taking a class, I'm learning what the teacher wants me to know. When I'm doing research, I'm creating knowledge myself. Earlier in the week, UD was selected as one of the nations best undergraduate institutions in The Princeton Reviews The Best 357 Colleges. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
