Windows XP users urged to install Service Pack 2
3:56 p.m., Aug. 31, 2004--UDs Information Technologies-Network and Systems Services staff advise computer users to install the newly released update for the Microsoft Windows XP operating system to take advantage of improved security features. The update, Service Pack 2 (SP2), patches several vulnerabilities in Windows XP and includes a more secure Internet firewall.
Although some users have reported that SP2 has led to some operational differences in their systems, IT has tested SP2 with software supported and distributed by the University and found that the update does not appear to affect software licensed for UD. Reported differences in operation are outlined below.
- After installing McAfees VirusScan software, some SP2 users reported seeing an error message about out-of-date antivirus software just after their computer reboots. The warning can be ignored because VirusScan will automatically check for updates when the computer restarts.
- Some users reported that when they downloaded software from UDeploy, the Universitys software site [http://udeploy.udel.edu], they received a warning that the softwares publisher is not recognized. This is a new security check performed by SP2 and can be ignored in the cases of software downloaded from the UDeploy web site. (IT staff recommend that University users check the publisher of any other software downloaded from the Internet before installation.)
- The SP2 firewall may block communication that some software attempts to make over the Internet. When that happens, SP2 launches a window in which it asks the user to block or unblock the connection. If the person is using a trusted program to connect to a reliable Internet server, that user may choose to unblock the connection.
