NFL team rosters include four former Blue Hens

Rich Gannon
11:54 a.m., Sept. 8, 2004--Four former University of Delaware football players have spots on National Football League team rosters after final cuts made over the weekend.

Rich Gannon leads the way as the starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders, opening the season Sunday, Sept. 12, against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In addition, three members of the 2003 NCAA Division I-AA national championship Fightin’ Blue Hens were signed to team practice squads. Quarterback Andy Hall is with the Philadelphia Eagles, defensive back Mike Adams is with the San Francisco 49ers and defensive end Shawn Johnson is with the Tennessee Titans.

A fourth member of the championship team, offensive lineman Jason Nerys, was waived by the New York Jets. Among other former Hens, running back Keith Burnell was released by the Jets and wide receiver Jamin Elliott by the Chicago Bears.

Gannon, the 2002 NFL Most Valuable Player who is coming off a shoulder injury that cost him most of last season, will start for the Raiders against the Steelers. The last time Gannon led Oakland into Pittsburgh, he completed 43 passes in 64 attempts for 403 yards.

Hall was a sixth-round draft pick of the Eagles. The team elected to keep veteran quarterbacks Donovan McNabb, Koy Detmer and Jeff Blake on the active roster and signed Hall to the practice squad.

Adams signed a free agent contract with the 49ers and performed well throughout training camp to earn a spot on the practice squad.

Johnson was a sixth-round draft pick of the Raiders who was injured through much of training camp. After being released by Oakland, he was quickly signed to the Tennessee practice squad.
