Arts & Sciences debuts e-newsletter

3:04 p.m., Sept. 17, 2004--UD’s College of Arts & Sciences has launched a new e-newsletter, Emphasis, to bring information about the college to faculty, alumni, parents, students, friends and other cyberspace travelers. The newsletter can be accessed at [chico.nss.udel.edu/deptnews/deptnews.html?2501].

In his introduction to the newsletter, Bobby Gempesaw, interim dean, said, “In this publication, which will be updated frequently, we will introduce you to the people, news and events that make our college exciting, vibrant and a source of pride to over 800 campus faculty and staff, 8,000 current students, 60,000 alumni and innumerable special friends of the college. Highlighted will be the teaching, research and accomplishments of all these constituentsŠ”

The inaugural issue has articles about the summer research program’s record-breaking 94 students who presented posters or gave talks at this year’s Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium; a wrap up of prestigious awards won by faculty and students; how art conservation students traveled the world this summer learning new skills; how McKay Jenkins, professor of English, is participating in a new federal program that helps American soldiers learn how to write their own stories; and who has recently been hired and who has retired.

On the Emphasis home page is a list of Homecoming events and stories about the opening of the Paul R. Jones Collection, the oldest, largest and most comprehensive collection of works by 20th-Century African American artists in the world; UD’s Hagley Museum Program’s 50th anniversary; and the Disaster Research Center’s recent international conference.
