2:43 p.m., Sept. 17, 2004--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Sept. 17 Los Angeles Times story about difficulties faced by George Mitchell, the chairman of the board of the Walt Disney Co., as controversial Chief Executive Officer Michael Eisner prepares to step down. "For Mitchell, this is one of those acid tests," Elson told the Times. "To date, he's been a very strong supporter of Eisner. Now he's at a fork in the road, and which road he takes will have a huge impact on how investors view him."

Benigno Aguirre, professor of sociology and criminal justice with the Disaster Research Center, was quoted in a Sept. 17 Christian Science Monitor story about lessons learned in the wake of devastating hurricanes. One of the great success stories of disaster preparedness and mitigation is the effort of federal and state governments regarding hurricanes, Aguirre told the newspaper. He added of Hurricane Ivan, "Of course, when you have this kind of situation where you have a huge storm that takes up the entire Gulf of Mexico, it's very difficult for any kind of administration or government to do a perfect job. But [the evacuation effort] is just an indication of this hard work."

Joan DelFattore, professor of English, was quoted in a Sept. 16 Greenville (S.C.) News story about prayer in public schools and the fine line between free expression and government endorsement of a particular religion. "It really is a very dicey situation because it pits two of the most basic American values against each other," DelFattore told the News. "It pits majority rule against individual rights."

UD President David P. Roselle was interviewed by WDEL-AM on Sept. 15 as he and Newark Mayor Vance Funk went door-to-door in the city to promote the “UDo Live Here” program, which encourages UD students and permanent Newark residents who live near each other to forge neighborly relationships.

Laurence Kalkstein, senior research fellow at the UD Center for Climatic Research, was quoted in a Sept. 14 Associated Press story about how an increase in the length and intensity of heat waves in California in coming decades could lead to an increase in the number of heat-related deaths.

Samuel L. Gaertner, professor of psychology, discusses the issue of aversive racism in a story in the Sept. 12 issue of the Kinston (N.C.) Free Press.

The book Einstein Never Used Flash Cards by Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, H. Rodney Sharp Professor of Education, and Kathy Hirsh-Pasek of Temple University was featured in a column in the Sept. 12 Baltimore Sun.

Tricia Wachtendorf, assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice with the Disaster Research Center, was interviewed Sept. 8 by KYW-TV in Philadelphia for her research on the World Trade Center disaster. Benigno Aguirre, professor of sociology and criminal justice and also with the Disaster Research Center, discussed his work critiquing the Homeland Security alert system.

Former UD football coach Harold R. “Tubby” Raymond is featured in the latest issue of Art and Frame Review. The story notes that Raymond has long been an avid painter, preparing portraits of Fightin’ Blue Hen players and, most recently, directors of the American Football Coaches Association. The story quotes UD alumnus Todd Hranicka, an executive for the Framerica Corp. who played for Raymond.
