James Corbett, assistant professor of marine studies, was quoted in a story in the Aug. 30 issue of USA Today concerning air pollution caused by ships. Ships were perceived as a small source that could be neglected, Corbett said. We've been regulating cars for 30 to 35 years. Ships have not been significantly regulated to date. Joseph Pika, professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a story in the Aug. 30 News Journal concerning the Republican National Convention and the tone that President George W. Bush must set. Voters use a second term as a referendum on the first, Pika said. He has to revisit the successes of his first term, but he also has to convince them he has a plan to maintain prosperity at home and security. The award-winning UD cheerleaders were featured in an Aug. 30 story on WPVI-TV. Seven members of the team will be featured in commercials for ABC football. Paul R. Jones, UD benefactor, is quoted in an Aug. 29 Associated Press story concerning the new show featuring works drawn from his collection. A Century of African American Art: The Paul R. Jones Collection will open Sept. 8 and run through the academic year in Mechanical Hall and the University Galleries in Old College. Jones told AP he hopes his art can be used to extend the idea of diversity to a range of academic pursuits. I'm thinking what we'll begin to see is a new day in how we look at each other, and I think the art will be the universal appeal that brings people together, he said. Jones also appeared on WHYY-TVs Delaware Tonight program on Aug. 30 to discuss the collection and exhibition. John Byrne, director of the UD Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, is quoted in an Aug. 29 News Journal story concerning solar power. Ralph Begleiter, Edward and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Distinguished Journalist in Residence at UD, was quoted in an Aug. 27 Newhouse News Service story on differences between Democratic and Republican conventions.
