Women and heart disease talk set Oct. 20

10:27 a.m., Sept. 23, 2004--Kathleen McNicholas, a cardiac surgeon and also a heart patient, will present “A Heart to Heart Talk about the Female Heart,” from 12:05-12:55 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, in Room 006, Willard Hall Education Building. In her presentation sponsored by UD’s Employee Wellness Center, McNicholas will discuss how women often experience symptoms different from men and what women can do to lower risk of heart disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women. Women have one in two chances of dying from cardiovascular disease.

The good news is that many heart disease risk factors, such as smoking, physical inactivity, stress and high cholesterol can be controlled to reduce risk.

According to Marianne Carter, director of the Employee Wellness Center, who lost a friend from a heart attack at age 41, all woman employees can benefit from this important program. Many women don’t recognize the symptoms, and all women need to assess their risk and work toward risk reduction, Carter said.

The cost of the program is 10 Wellness Dollars. To register go to [www.udel.edu/wellness] or call 831-8388.
