Employee Wellness offers three health screenings

11:52 a.m., July 16, 2004--Because summer is a great time to pause and assess individual health situations and needs, UD’s Employee Wellness Center is offering three convenient health screenings during July and August. To schedule an appointment any of these screenings call 831-8388.

Osteoporosis screening
Osteoporosis often has no symptoms until a fracture occurs. Screening can identify low bone density so that preventive measures can be taken.

Osteoporosis screening for UD employees and retirees over age 40 will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, in 310 Gore Hall. Conducted by Christiana Care Imaging Services, the bone-density screening test consists of an ultrasound taken at the heel. Results are immediate and participants whose tests indicate some risk will be encouraged to seek further testing, and a letter will be sent to their health care provider. The cost is $10 Wellness Dollars.

Hearing screening
Hearing loss often progresses gradually. A hearing screening for UD employees and retirees will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 12, in 125 Memorial Hall. An audiologist from Delaware Hearing Consultants will conduct the five-minute tests and results will be available immediately. The cost is 10 Wellness Dollars.

Cholesterol screening
Heart disease affects millions of Americans, with high cholesterol putting individuals at risk for a heart attack or stroke. Minor lifestyle changes such as following a low-fat diet and being physically active can help keep cholesterol levels within a healthy range.

Wellness Center staff will conduct a cholesterol screening from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 19, in 125 Memorial Hall. The test, which requires a simple finger stick, takes about 10 minutes, does not require fasting, and will provide total cholesterol, HDL (good cholesterol) levels and risk-ratio results. The cost is 10 Wellness Dollars plus a $5 copayment.
