Composer Philip Glass to appear via Internet2 1:14 p.m., Sept. 24, 2004--Philip Glass, Americas most recorded contemporary composer, will appear at Mitchell Hall on Monday evening, Oct. 18, via Internet2. Glass appeared briefly playing piano in the movie The Truman Show, has been spoofed on South Park, and his music has been featured in several films. The free program at Mitchell Hall will feature music from Glass’ recordings and films and a question-and-answer session with the composer in New York. Lloyd Shorter, assistant professor of music, will present a retrospective of Glass career at 7 p.m. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., Shorter and Glass discuss the composers musical background and output. Later, audience members will have an opportunity to ask Glass questions, using Internet2, technology that provides DVD-quality picture resolution and sound. Ann Ardis, associate dean of arts and science, and Jennifer Barker, associate professor of music, will host the two-way question-and-answer session. Shorter, who linked Glass and UD, met the prolific composer through Relache, a new music ensemble in Philadelphia where Shorter plays oboe and serves as one of the artistic directors. Shorter and Glass got to know each other when the group commissioned a Glass composition, and Shorter later worked with Glass in the composers SoHo studio. Shorter said he knows Glass plans to discuss his views on composing music for films, in addition to other topics. This is a unique experience in that we can actually have people talk with a composer about his work with Internet2, Shorter said.
