5:19 p.m., Sept. 24, 2004--Freshman Family Weekend, Sept. 17-19, gave family members an opportunity to visit UD freshmen and transfer students and see campus life in full swing, while enjoying special entertainment, educational and athletic events.

Nearly 1,000 new students and family members attended performances by the Chicago Comedy Company Friday, Sept. 17, in Mitchell Hall, according to Nancy Millard, assistant director of University relations.

“For Saturday’s tailgate dinner and pep rally, over 1,300 advance tickets were sold,” Millard said. “Everyone loved the Marching Band, cheerleaders and dance team. And we handed out 'glow sticks,' which made a big hit.”

Other weekend events included:

  • “A Century of African American Art: The Paul R. Jones Collection,” an exhibition of the nation’s premiere collection of 20th-Century African American art;
  • “Back to Class” faculty lectures, which gave visitors a chance to sample college education at UD;
  • “Dessert with the Deans,” which allowed visitors to enjoy refreshments with University administrators, faculty and staff;
  • An open ice skating session at the Fred Rust Ice Arena; and
  • “Lunch University Style,” which let families sample UD cuisine in a college dining facility.

On Sunday, Newark Community Day gave visiting families an opportunity to further explore the campus and downtown Newark. Activities included live entertainment on four stages, mini-moto pocket bike racing, a sidewalk chalk festival, arts and crafts displays and retail and dining specials.

Presented by the Office of Alumni and University Relations, the weekend is designed to give parents and family members of new freshmen and transfer students a chance to reunite and explore the University and Newark communities.
