Influenza (flu) is a serious disease of the nose, throat and lungs and can lead to pneumonia. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 114,000 persons in the U.S. are hospitalized and 36,000 die of the flu each year. Public health authorities recommend that adults and children with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease get a flu shot. Pregnant women also should get the vaccine because pregnancy increases the risk of serious illness from the flu. Persons allergic to eggs or thimerosal, or who have had Guillain Barre syndrome should check with their doctors before getting flu shots. Dennis Smith, RN, a graduate student at the Employee Wellness Center, said that sometimes persons who get the vaccine may get the flu, but generally it is a milder case. He also said that although some people get a sore arm for a few days, serious side effects from the flu shot are very rare. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
