Blue Hens face Maine in Homecoming game

10:13 a.m., Sept. 29, 2004--The University of Delaware will celebrate its annual Homecoming with an important Atlantic 10 Football Conference contest between two top 10 teams as the No. 4-ranked Fightin’ Blue Hens host the No. 8-ranked University of Maine at noon, Saturday, in Delaware Stadium.

UD (3-1) enters the game after a key 21-7 victory at the University of Massachusetts. In that game, the defense continued to dominate and the offense came to life as halfback Sean Bleiler rushed for 110 yards and quarterback Sonny Riccio threw for 115 yards and ran for another 70.

Wide receiver David Boler made an outstanding catch in the back of the end zone for a UD touchdown.

The Hens’ defense allowed Massachusetts just 10 first downs and 226 total yards.

Maine (2-1) enters the game fresh off a bye week, during which the team had time to savor its shocking 9-7 victory over Mississippi State University of the vaunted Southeastern Conference.

The Black Bears are led by running back Marcus Williams, who has carried the ball 53 times for 248 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Ron Whitcomb, who has completed 48 of 73 passes for 470 yards and five touchdowns.

Whitcomb’s favorite targets are Christian Periera, who has 15 catches for 198 yards and two touchdowns, Ryan Waller and Kevin McMahan.

On defense, Maine safety Brandon McGowan leads the team with 23 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Last year’s game between the two teams, also played at Delaware Stadium, was a wild affair. Maine jumped out to a 21-0 lead and the Hens appeared all but done until quarterback Andy Hall dove into the end zone for a score at the end of the third quarter. Sidney Haugabrook then returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown to fully ignite the comeback that led to a 24-21 UD overtime victory.

The game is the Atlantic 10 Network Game of the Week and will be broadcast live on Comcast Sportsnet. Bob Picozzi will handle the play-by-play with former UD and New York Giants quarterback Scott Brunner doing the color commentary.

The game also will be broadcast on the radio by WRDX-FM 94.7, better known as The River, and by UD’s WVUD-FM 91.3.
